Ping

Sends four ICMP packets to a public host and measures round-trip time (RTT) and packet loss, to tell a real outage apart from a name-resolution or local connectivity issue.

What it actually measures

Average RTT tells you how long a packet takes to go there and back. Packet loss other than 0% usually points to network congestion, firewall filtering, or an unstable link.

Limits of this check

Only public IPs or domains are allowed: private and reserved ranges are blocked to prevent probing internal networks other than this server's own.

Why does ping not respond even if the site works?

Many servers block ICMP via firewall while the web service stays up. No ping response does not mean the host is down.

How many packets are sent?

Four, with a short per-packet timeout, same as a standard console ping.
